Burnham to Advance Plans for Electoral Reform in the UK

UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham is expected to announce plans to advance electoral reform, opening the way for a possible change to the voting system used for Westminster elections.

Burnham is expected to outline the proposals in broad terms during his first Labour Party conference speech as prime minister, with a process potentially leading to the replacement of the first-past-the-post system with proportional representation.

One option under consideration is the creation of a national commission to examine electoral reform and develop proposals before the next general election. The issue could subsequently feature in Labour’s manifesto, allowing voters to have a say on the proposed changes.

Nearly 100 Labour MPs have supported efforts to establish such a commission, while polling of MPs has indicated that 53% support a review of the first-past-the-post system.

The current voting system elects the candidate with the most votes in each constituency. Proportional representation, by contrast, seeks to allocate seats more closely in line with the share of votes received by political parties.

The proposed reform would represent a significant change to the UK’s electoral arrangements. However, supporters and opponents remain divided over its potential consequences, including how governments would be formed and how effectively they could operate under a proportional system.
