The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has warned traders and residents in Kano State against mishandling the Naira, urging them to treat the currency with care.
The apex bank said improper handling of banknotes contributes to their rapid deterioration and increases the cost of replacing damaged notes in circulation.
The CBN advised members of the public to keep banknotes clean and flat, avoid folding, crumpling, stapling or writing on them, and refrain from exposing them to liquids and other substances.
It also reiterated that spraying, stepping on or dancing on the Naira constitutes abuse of the currency. The bank further warned against selling or trading Naira notes and coins above their face value.
The CBN encouraged traders and other Nigerians to make greater use of electronic payment channels, including bank transfers, mobile banking, POS and card payments, where possible.
The warning comes amid continued efforts by financial and law enforcement authorities to curb Naira abuse and illicit currency transactions. Previous enforcement exercises in Kano have resulted in convictions linked to illegal currency trading and abuse of the Naira.
The CBN said responsible handling of banknotes would help preserve the quality of the currency and extend its lifespan.
