The death toll from a weekend shooting at a tavern in Wedela township, southwest of Johannesburg, has risen to 18 after another victim died in hospital, South African police said on Monday.
The attack occurred on Saturday night when gunmen opened fire on patrons inside and outside the tavern. Police said 13 men and four women were initially killed, while several others sustained gunshot injuries. The latest death brings the total to 18.
Police have launched a manhunt for the attackers, who were reportedly armed with assault rifles and pistols. No arrests had been made as of Monday morning.
Authorities said the motive remains unclear, although the area has reportedly experienced tensions involving groups linked to illegal gold mining. Police are continuing investigations into the attack.
The shooting was one of two mass shootings in South Africa over the weekend. A separate attack at an entertainment venue in Lwandle, near Cape Town, left 10 people dead and 11 others injured, bringing the combined death toll from the two incidents to 28 after the latest death in Wedela.
