Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has called for stronger government regulation of artificial intelligence, warning that powerful AI systems in the hands of malicious actors could cause catastrophic loss of life.
Speaking in an interview with NBC’s Kristen Welker, Gates said AI companies should not be left to regulate themselves. He urged lawmakers and law-enforcement agencies to establish mandatory safeguards and monitoring as the technology continues to develop.
Gates said the regulatory requirements would add some costs for the industry but argued they would not significantly slow technological development. He also warned that AI could become an exceptionally powerful tool for people intending to cause large-scale harm.
His comments come as governments and technology companies debate how to manage the risks associated with increasingly capable AI systems. Other technology leaders have also called for stronger safeguards and international cooperation.
Gates has previously argued that AI could deliver major benefits to humanity while warning that its rapid development could also create serious risks if appropriate protections are not established.
The latest comments add to growing pressure on governments to develop rules governing AI development, safety testing and the use of advanced systems.
