US President Donald Trump has criticised the United Nations over what he described as insufficient attention to the persecution of Christians around the world, accusing UN human rights officials of focusing heavily on issues involving the United States.

Trump made the remarks during his address to the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday. He argued that the UN Human Rights Council had little to say about what he described as persecution of Christians and abuses by repressive governments.

The president contrasted that with the council’s criticism of US policies, particularly immigration enforcement and measures concerning transgender issues. He also defended the US position on border control, saying national sovereignty gives countries the right to determine who enters their territory.

Trump’s comments formed part of a broader address in which he criticised several international institutions and questioned aspects of the current multilateral system. He also discussed Iran, Russia’s war in Ukraine, migration and artificial intelligence.

The UN and its human rights mechanisms have continued to address religious freedom and persecution in different parts of the world, although Trump’s remarks focused on what he considers inadequate attention to Christians.

His speech comes amid renewed debate over the role of international institutions and the balance between national sovereignty and global cooperation.
