The Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited has rejected allegations of irregularities surrounding the procurement of the NIGCOMSAT-2A and NIGCOMSAT-2B satellites, insisting that the process was conducted in line with established procedures.
NIGCOMSAT said the procurement process followed the required technical, financial and administrative stages and dismissed attempts to cast doubt on the integrity of the project. The agency’s response comes after questions were raised over the documentary trail connecting government approvals, procurement, contractor selection and subsequent agreements.
The two satellites are being developed as replacements and upgrades to Nigeria’s existing satellite capacity, with the Federal Government targeting their launch in 2028 and 2029. They are expected to expand broadband and communications services while supporting national security and connectivity in underserved areas.
NIGCOMSAT’s position follows reports identifying Thales Alenia Space and Israel Aerospace Industries as contractors associated with the programme. The agency has maintained that the companies emerged through the competitive procurement process after meeting the required criteria.
The controversy highlights the importance of transparency in major public technology projects, particularly those involving national security, communications infrastructure and substantial public resources.
