Lionel Messi continued to rewrite the record books on Sunday night, scoring his 930th career goal with a stunning free-kick as Inter Miami were held to a 2-2 draw by San Diego FC in Major League Soccer.
San Diego stunned the hosts by taking the lead in the 12th minute through Anders Dreyer. The Danish forward raced onto Jeppe Tverskov’s through ball before calmly chipping Inter Miami goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair.
Messi responded just 12 minutes later after being fouled just outside the San Diego penalty area.
The Argentine stepped up and produced another trademark set-piece, curling his left-footed effort over the wall. The ball struck the post before crossing the line beyond goalkeeper CJ dos Santos to restore parity.
The goal was Messi’s 20th in the 2026 MLS season and the 75th free-kick goal of his illustrious career.
It also took his Inter Miami tally to 101 goals, just four days after he reached the 100-goal milestone for the club during their Campeones Cup victory over Cruz Azul.
According to football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Messi had reached 930 career goals with his latest free-kick, while also recording his 101st goal since joining Inter Miami.
Inter Miami eventually completed the comeback in the 74th minute when Luis Suárez found the net to put the home side 2-1 ahead.
San Diego refused to surrender, however, and Dreyer struck again in the 82nd minute to complete his brace and restore parity.
The result extended Inter Miami’s run of consecutive MLS draws to four matches. The club now has 46 points from 26 games, with 12 wins, four defeats and 10 draws.
