The European Union Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS has partnered with Nigeria Fashion Week 2026 to promote sustainable fashion, circular production and green enterprise across Nigeria’s growing creative industry.

The partnership will support the Going Green 5 Initiative, a major component of this year’s Nigeria Fashion Week, which will be held in Abuja from October 2 to 4 under the theme, “Beyond the Runway: Fashion and Culture at the Heart of the Green & Blue Economy.”

The initiative is designed to encourage recycling, upcycling, creative reuse and responsible sourcing as practical ways of reducing waste, extending the lifespan of materials and creating new opportunities for designers, entrepreneurs and businesses.

A major attraction will be the Going Green Collection, a runway showcase featuring Nigerian and international designers working with recycled, upcycled, reclaimed and other environmentally responsible materials.

The collection is expected to demonstrate how materials that might otherwise be discarded can be transformed through creativity and innovation into products with commercial and cultural value.

EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Gautier Mignot, said the partnership formed part of the EU’s wider cooperation with Nigeria to advance a greener and more circular economy.

He noted that Nigeria’s fashion industry had significant potential to transform waste materials into new products, businesses and economic opportunities, particularly for young people.

The collaboration will also support the Trees for Nigeria Campaign, an environmental initiative of Nigeria Fashion Week that will bring together designers, models, young people, government representatives, development partners and other participants for tree-planting and environmental awareness activities.

Beyond the runway, the event is expected to provide a platform for discussions involving designers, manufacturers, policymakers, investors, environmental practitioners and young creatives.

The discussions will focus on sustainable fashion, circular economy practices, green innovation, youth entrepreneurship and responsible production, with the broader aim of strengthening the competitiveness of Nigeria’s fashion industry.

President of Nigeria Fashion Week and President/CEO of Legendary Gold Limited, Lexy Mojo-Eyes, said the collaboration would help connect Nigeria’s fashion industry with the global sustainability agenda.

The Federal Government is also supporting the event. Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musa Musawa, has reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to positioning Nigeria’s creative and cultural industries as drivers of entrepreneurship, job creation, exports and economic growth.

The 2026 Nigeria Fashion Week will feature runway showcases, exhibitions, business engagements, sustainability activities, the Nigeria Fashion Entrepreneurs Forum and the Nigeria Fashion Awards.

The event is expected to bring together designers, buyers, retailers, manufacturers, investors, policymakers, diplomats, development partners and other stakeholders in Abuja.

The partnership places sustainability at the centre of Nigeria’s fashion conversation at a time when businesses globally are facing growing pressure to reduce waste and adopt more responsible production methods.

For Nigeria, organisers say the shift towards sustainable fashion could also create opportunities for entrepreneurship, employment, innovation and new businesses within the creative economy.
