Toyota estimates that modernising its factories with automation and robotics could cost about 1 trillion yen ($6.4 billion) annually from 2028 as the world’s largest automaker expands the use of advanced technology.
The estimate covers Toyota, its group companies and major suppliers. The company told investors that about 400,000 robots could be required, including new machines, replacements and both humanoid and conventional robots.
The investment would support automated production, logistics and future cooperation between workers and robots. Automakers are increasingly adopting robotics to address labour shortages, ageing factories and rising costs.
Analysts at Bernstein said Toyota’s robotics expansion could create opportunities for growth beyond vehicle manufacturing. Hyundai also plans to introduce humanoid robots at its US factory in Georgia from 2028.
