Jaguar Land Rover is in talks with NATO countries over potential sales of its newly revamped military Defender, as the British carmaker seeks to benefit from rising defence spending across Europe.

The company has established a new Defender defence division as it looks to expand its military business beyond its longstanding relationship with the British armed forces and secure contracts from other defence organisations.

The new Defender Wolf Series II has been developed as a military vehicle capable of carrying personnel and equipment and adapting to different operational requirements.

JLR says the vehicle is available in different configurations, including tactical mobility, general mobility, ambulance and utility versions, allowing it to serve a range of military roles.

The company is also competing for a major UK Ministry of Defence contract to replace an ageing fleet of military vehicles. The Light Mobility Vehicle programme is expected to be worth hundreds of millions of pounds, with JLR facing competition from other vehicle manufacturers.

The push into defence comes as NATO members increase military spending amid heightened security concerns across Europe. JLR sees the growing demand for military equipment as an opportunity to create a new source of revenue at a time when the global car market remains challenging.

The company has faced weaker demand in some key markets, rising costs and significant operational disruption. It has also announced plans to cut about 4,000 jobs globally as part of a wider effort to reduce costs.

JLR has insisted that its move into the defence sector is separate from the job reductions and is instead part of a longer-term strategy to develop new markets for its vehicles.

The Defender Wolf Series II is designed and engineered in the UK, with its engine produced in Wolverhampton. The company says expanding defence sales could provide important benefits for its domestic supply chain, which includes more than 2,200 British suppliers.

JLR’s renewed focus on defence reflects a broader shift within Europe’s automotive industry, with several major manufacturers exploring opportunities linked to increased military spending.

For JLR, securing NATO contracts could provide a more stable source of demand while strengthening the company’s position in the specialist vehicle market.

The company is also pursuing opportunities outside Europe. JLR is preparing to enter the US pickup market with a Defender-based vehicle through a partnership with Stellantis, highlighting the wider effort to expand the Defender brand into new commercial segments.

The NATO discussions are still at the negotiation stage, and no major international defence contract has yet been confirmed.

However, successful deals could give JLR access to a growing European defence market while supporting manufacturing activity and jobs across its British supply chain.
