Former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad has defended Peter Obi against attempts to link the Labour Party leader to the 1966 military coup in Nigeria.

Ahmad argued that Obi should not be held responsible for the events of 1966, noting that the former Anambra State governor was not involved in the coup.

His comments come amid renewed political debate over historical events and attempts to associate contemporary political figures with Nigeria’s past military interventions.

Ahmad’s position has added to the ongoing discussion over the use of historical events in political arguments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
