Huawei has unveiled its latest flagship foldable smartphone, stepping up its challenge in the premium handset market as Xiaomi and Apple prepare to introduce competing devices.
The Mate XT2 series builds on Huawei’s position in the emerging tri-fold smartphone segment, featuring a dual-hinge design that allows the device to unfold into a tablet-sized display. The new phones are powered by Huawei’s Kirin 9050 Pro processor, part of the company’s ongoing effort to develop its own semiconductor technology amid U.S. restrictions on access to advanced chips.
Huawei says the new processor is designed to deliver increased computing performance while improving power efficiency. The company has linked the chip’s architecture to its LogicFolding technology, developed under its broader strategy for advancing chip production despite technology restrictions.
The Mate XT2 will carry a premium price tag, starting at 19,999 yuan ($2,980) and reaching 24,999 yuan ($3,725) for the top configuration. Sales are scheduled to begin on September 12.
Beyond its tri-fold design, Huawei has introduced several hardware upgrades, including a redesigned folding mechanism, improved water resistance and upgraded cameras. The device also features a privacy display technology intended to limit screen visibility to people viewing the phone directly.
Huawei claims the new series delivers 42% higher overall performance than its predecessor based on internal testing.
Huawei Faces Growing Premium-Segment Competition
The launch comes at a critical moment for Huawei as competition in China’s premium smartphone market intensifies.
Xiaomi is also launching a new foldable smartphone, while Apple is expected to unveil its latest iPhone lineup on September 9. The event is also widely expected to mark Apple’s entry into the foldable smartphone market.
Apple’s arrival could significantly increase pressure on established foldable-phone manufacturers, particularly as the company brings its extensive hardware ecosystem and global customer base into the category.
Huawei currently maintains a strong position in China’s smartphone market. According to IDC, the company accounted for 22.6% of China’s smartphone market in the second quarter, ahead of Apple at 18.1% and Xiaomi at 12.4%.
Its position is even stronger in foldable smartphones. Research from Smart Analytics Global shows that Huawei accounted for 68% of foldable smartphone shipments in China during the second quarter.
Huawei is currently the only major smartphone manufacturer selling a tri-fold device, giving it an early advantage in a segment that remains relatively new.
However, the competitive landscape is changing. Samsung remains the world’s largest foldable smartphone vendor, while Xiaomi continues to expand its premium foldable lineup. Apple’s expected entry could further accelerate investment and innovation across the sector.
The Next Phase of the Foldable Smartphone Market
Huawei’s Mate XT2 launch underscores how smartphone manufacturers are increasingly using foldable technology to differentiate their premium devices.
The competition is no longer focused solely on flexible displays. Manufacturers are also competing on processing power, durability, battery efficiency, cameras, software and privacy features as they attempt to make foldable phones more practical for everyday users.
With Huawei defending its lead in China, Xiaomi expanding its foldable portfolio and Apple potentially entering the market, the premium smartphone industry is heading toward a new phase of competition.
The coming months could provide an important test of whether tri-fold and other advanced foldable designs can move beyond technological novelty and become a significant part of the mainstream smartphone market.
