Former United States Defence Secretary Leon Panetta has warned that the war with Iran could continue for another six months, raising concerns that the prolonged conflict could develop into a wider and potentially open ended military confrontation.
Panetta said the United States and Iran remain locked in a difficult stalemate, with neither side appearing close to achieving a decisive outcome. He warned that the absence of a clear exit strategy could leave Washington facing a conflict similar to the long wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The warning comes more than six months after the United States and Israel launched military operations against Iran on February 28. The conflict has since involved repeated strikes, retaliatory attacks and disruptions around the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
Panetta said the situation has created a difficult choice for President Donald Trump. Washington could withdraw and accept the political consequences, maintain the current level of military pressure or intensify operations in an attempt to gain greater control over the Strait of Hormuz.
The former defence secretary expressed doubt that the conflict would end quickly, arguing that the current military and political situation offers few signs of an immediate breakthrough.
The war has already placed considerable pressure on the United States military. American forces have suffered casualties, while the prolonged deployment of troops, warships and air defence systems across the Middle East has placed additional demands on military resources.
The conflict has also affected global energy markets because of the disruption around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important routes for oil shipments. Any further escalation in the area could create additional pressure on energy prices and international trade.
Panetta also raised concerns about turmoil within the US defence establishment, saying internal tensions could weaken confidence in Washington’s ability to manage the conflict effectively.
The former official’s assessment comes as the Trump administration faces increasing pressure to determine a clear endgame for the war. While Washington has maintained military pressure on Tehran, efforts to prevent the conflict from becoming a long term confrontation have so far failed to produce a lasting settlement.
The possibility of another six months of fighting could have significant consequences for the United States, Iran and countries across the Middle East. A prolonged conflict could increase military spending, deepen pressure on American forces and further destabilise an already fragile regional security environment.
For Iran, continued fighting would also carry heavy economic and military costs, particularly as attacks and counterattacks continue to affect infrastructure and access to key trade routes.
Panetta’s warning has therefore renewed questions about whether the conflict can be brought to an end through negotiations or whether both sides are heading towards an extended confrontation with no clear conclusion.
