South Korea’s media regulator has urged Meta to apply its planned youth-protection measures globally, arguing that safeguards for children and teenagers should not be limited to specific countries.

The Korea Media and Communications Commission said social media platforms have a responsibility to reduce features that could encourage excessive or addictive use among young people.

The measures being considered include limiting algorithm-driven content recommendations, reducing engagement-focused features such as likes, and restricting push notifications that encourage users to return to the platform.

The regulator’s call follows growing scrutiny of Meta’s approach to protecting minors on platforms including Facebook and Instagram. It also comes as countries around the world consider tougher rules aimed at addressing social media’s impact on children and teenagers.

South Korea is considering additional legislation to strengthen protections for young users, with several related bills reportedly pending in parliament.

The latest development highlights the growing international pressure on major technology companies to adopt stronger and more consistent safeguards for minors across their global platforms. South Korea wants Meta’s youth-safety measures to become a global standard, reflecting growing worldwide efforts to make social media safer for children and teenagers
