China’s Huawei Technologies and U.S. computer maker HP Inc. have signed a multi-year global patent cross-licensing agreement covering Wi-Fi technology, including the latest Wi-Fi 7 standard.
Under the agreement, HP will gain access to certain Huawei Wi-Fi patents, while Huawei will receive reciprocal rights to patents held by HP. The companies did not disclose the financial terms or the full scope of the patents covered by the deal.
The agreement follows a patent dispute that began in 2025, when Huawei accused HP of using its Wi-Fi 6 technology without authorization. The dispute was later resolved after HP joined the Sisvel Wi-Fi 6 patent pool.
For Huawei, the agreement highlights the growing importance of its intellectual-property portfolio as the company seeks to generate returns from years of research and development. Huawei said more than 1.6 billion consumer devices were using its Wi-Fi technology by the end of 2025.
HP, meanwhile, described the arrangement as a standard-essential patent licence covering widely used Wi-Fi technology, rather than the beginning of a broader commercial partnership with Huawei.
The deal is notable because it brings two major technology companies from China and the United States into a long-term intellectual-property agreement amid continuing geopolitical and technology tensions between the two countries.
