Former Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld has urged his former club to make a move for Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen, arguing that the Galatasaray forward could provide the goals Tottenham lacked last season.
Tottenham have already made significant additions to their squad during the summer transfer window and have previously shown interest in Osimhen. However, they face competition from several Premier League clubs, including north London rivals Arsenal.
Alderweireld believes Osimhen would be an ideal addition to Roberto De Zerbi’s attacking options as Tottenham continue their search for an established centre forward before the transfer window closes.
“Spurs could use a striker like Victor Osimhen, they need his goals because it’s what they lacked last season as well,” Alderweireld said in an interview with Hajper.
The former Belgium international acknowledged that Osimhen’s age could make some clubs cautious, but insisted experienced players remain important when building a competitive squad.
“The only concern for clubs like Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United is maybe his age. He’s not the youngest player anymore and it seems like everyone wants to find a 23-year-old superstar who can bang in goals for the next seven or eight years,” he said.
“But you also need a good mix.”
Tottenham have already invested heavily in their squad, reportedly breaking their transfer record twice with the arrivals of Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali, whose combined fees are said to be around £185 million.
The club have also strengthened other areas with the signings of Jan Paul van Hecke, Marcos Senesi, Andy Robertson and Martin Dubravka.
Despite those additions, Tottenham are still looking to improve their attacking options. The club have previously been linked with wide forwards such as Savinho, Cody Gakpo and Pedro Neto.
For Alderweireld, however, securing a proven goalscorer should be a priority, with Osimhen offering the kind of experience and attacking threat Tottenham need.
The former defender also highlighted the importance of having a balance between experienced players and younger talents, recalling his time at Ajax as an example.
“That’s why it can be important to sign proven players who know how things go so they can bring on the younger, potential superstars alongside them, because they can set the best example,” Alderweireld said.
Reflecting on his Ajax days, he added: “The mix was on another level. We had Dusan Tadic and Daley Blind and Frenkie De Jong and Matthijs de Ligt coming through. That’s what you need.”
Any attempt by Tottenham to sign Osimhen, however, could face stiff competition from Arsenal, who have also been linked with the Nigerian forward.
Galatasaray have reportedly held discussions with Arsenal over potential deals involving Gabriel Martinelli and Ethan Nwaneri, with Osimhen also understood to have been mentioned during those talks.
No active negotiations over Osimhen are currently believed to be taking place, leaving his future uncertain as the transfer window approaches its closing stages.
For Tottenham, Alderweireld’s message is clear: securing a proven striker such as Osimhen could provide the attacking firepower needed to take the club to another level.
