Nigeria’s courier market is increasingly moving beyond food deliveries, with clothing and footwear emerging as the largest category of items transported through the inDrive.Courier platform during the first half of 2026.

Data from about 5,000 classified orders placed across Nigeria between January and June showed that clothing and footwear accounted for 39.5 per cent of deliveries, while food and drinks represented 27.8 per cent. Cosmetics, beauty products and eyewear followed with 10 per cent.

Electronics accounted for 5.8 per cent of deliveries during the period, while documents and papers represented four per cent. Medicines and pharmacy products made up another three per cent of the classified orders.

The figures indicate a growing shift in the use of courier services from simple food orders and personal errands towards everyday commercial activities.

Fashion businesses, beauty entrepreneurs and small retailers are increasingly relying on on demand delivery services to move products from sellers to customers without having to maintain their own delivery fleets.

This trend is particularly important for Nigeria’s growing informal and digital commerce economy, where many small businesses operate through social media platforms and depend on quick and affordable logistics to complete customer orders.

For fashion vendors, for instance, courier services provide a way to shorten the period between receiving an online order and delivering the product to the customer. The same model is increasingly being adopted by businesses selling cosmetics, electronics and other consumer products.

Country Manager of inDrive Nigeria, Timothy Oladimeji, said the dominance of clothing and footwear demonstrated how individuals and businesses were using courier services to support commerce beyond routine errands.

He said the company was focused on providing reliable, affordable and secure delivery services capable of supporting businesses while meeting the changing needs of consumers.

Food nevertheless remains a major component of the courier market. Rice and fruits were among the most frequently delivered food items during the first half of the year, while jollof rice, shawarma, tigernut drinks and parfait also featured prominently among orders.

The broader growth of courier services is creating opportunities for small businesses to outsource logistics rather than invest in motorcycles, vehicles and dedicated delivery personnel.

The expansion is also contributing to the development of Nigeria’s app based logistics ecosystem, particularly as more consumers become comfortable ordering products online and receiving them at their homes or workplaces.

However, the increasing movement of valuable items such as electronics, fashion products and cosmetics has made security and reliability increasingly important.

inDrive said it has introduced measures including identity verification for couriers, courier profiles showing ratings and completed deliveries, real time tracking and shareable tracking links. Customers can also use a one time password to confirm delivery of a package.

The development comes after significant growth in inDrive’s Nigerian courier operations. Earlier in 2026, the company reported that its courier workforce in Nigeria had nearly doubled in 2025, while motorcycle couriers were completing an average of about 50 deliveries monthly.

The continued expansion suggests that courier platforms are becoming an increasingly important part of Nigeria’s retail and logistics ecosystem.

As digital commerce grows, demand for affordable last mile delivery is expected to increase, creating further opportunities for courier operators, small businesses and independent riders.

The trend also highlights how Nigeria’s logistics market is evolving from being largely associated with food delivery into a broader service supporting fashion, beauty, retail, personal commerce and business to business transactions.
