The Zamfara State Police Command has foiled an attack by armed bandits on security personnel in Zurmi Local Government Area and prevented a suspected improvised explosive device threat along the Gurusu–Gwashi Road in Bukkuyum Local Government Area.
According to the police, the bandits attacked security personnel providing protection during a tree planting exercise at the Zurmi Muslims’ Praying Ground along Rukudawa Road on August 12, 2026. The officers took cover and engaged the attackers in a gun battle, forcing them to retreat into a nearby forest.
Police said traces of blood found at the scene suggested that some of the attackers may have sustained gunshot injuries. No security personnel or civilians were killed in the attack.
In a separate incident on the same day, a suspected IED exploded along the Gurusu–Gwashi Road in Bukkuyum. No death or injury was recorded.
The command subsequently deployed its Explosive Ordnance Disposal team, supported by the Violence Crime Response Unit, to secure the area and make the route safe for commuters.
The police said joint security patrols would continue along the road and surrounding communities to prevent further attacks and detect possible explosive threats.
The command urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements, abandoned objects and other security concerns to the nearest police formation.
