The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) has urged education stakeholders to strengthen the implementation of the HOPE EDU Programme to improve learning outcomes in basic education across Nigeria.
The Executive Secretary of UBEC, Dr Aisha Garba, made the call on Monday while declaring open a regional thematic workshop for directors and support officers of State Universal Basic Education Boards (SUBEBs) from the South West and North Central geopolitical zones. According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the workshop is being held in Ikeja from August 16 to 26, 2026.
The workshop focuses on Result Area 1 of the HOPE EDU Programme, particularly the implementation of the Structured Pedagogy Package and book supply chain systems.
Garba described the workshop as an important step towards strengthening the foundations of basic education and ensuring that Nigerian children acquire essential literacy and numeracy skills.
She said the Federal Government, in partnership with the World Bank, was committed to ensuring that the programme delivered measurable improvements in teaching and learning.
According to NAN, the Structured Pedagogy Package is designed to strengthen teaching methods, teacher training and learning assessment through evidence based approaches aimed at improving literacy and numeracy.
Garba said the Book Supply Chain and Track and Trace System would also help ensure that quality learning materials reach the appropriate schools and pupils while promoting transparency and accountability.
She disclosed that states are expected to demonstrate readiness for the programme by November 15 to qualify for the first round of disbursements.
“This is not negotiable. It is the gateway to unlocking the first round of programme disbursements and, more importantly, the future of our children,” she said.
Garba urged participants to exchange ideas, develop practical implementation plans and ensure that knowledge gained from the workshop translates into measurable improvements in the quality of basic education.
