The Nigeria Police Force has arrested a suspect in connection with the vandalism of six transmission towers belonging to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), as authorities intensify efforts to curb attacks on the nation’s critical power infrastructure.

The arrest follows investigations into the destruction of high voltage transmission towers that disrupted electricity supply to affected communities and raised fresh concerns over the increasing wave of infrastructure vandalism across the country. Security agencies said the suspect was apprehended during an operation aimed at tracking individuals involved in the sabotage of national assets.

Officials disclosed that the damaged transmission towers form part of Nigeria’s electricity transmission network, which transports power from generation plants to distribution companies. The vandalism caused interruptions to power supply in several areas while engineers worked to restore the damaged facilities.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria has repeatedly warned that attacks on transmission infrastructure pose a serious threat to the stability of the national grid. According to the company, vandalism not only results in widespread power outages but also increases maintenance costs, delays electricity delivery and places additional financial pressure on the power sector.

Investigators believe the suspects targeted valuable components of the transmission towers, including steel structures and other metallic materials that are often sold as scrap. Security agencies said investigations are continuing to identify other members of the syndicate believed to be involved in similar acts of sabotage across different parts of the country.

Police authorities reaffirmed their commitment to protecting critical national infrastructure and bringing all those responsible for vandalism to justice. They warned that attacks on public facilities undermine national development, weaken economic activities and deprive businesses and households of reliable electricity.

Industry experts noted that vandalism remains one of the major challenges confronting Nigeria’s power sector. Beyond the immediate cost of replacing damaged equipment, such incidents often lead to prolonged outages, reduced transmission capacity and additional operational expenses that ultimately affect electricity consumers.

Stakeholders have called for stronger collaboration between security agencies, host communities and electricity operators to safeguard transmission facilities. They also urged the government to strengthen surveillance around critical infrastructure through the deployment of technology, community policing and stricter enforcement of laws against vandalism.

Energy analysts stressed that improving the security of transmission assets is essential for achieving a stable and reliable electricity supply. They argued that ongoing investments in power generation and transmission could be undermined if critical infrastructure continues to be targeted by vandals.

The latest arrest has been welcomed by stakeholders in the electricity sector, who believe it sends a strong message to criminal groups involved in the destruction of public assets. However, they emphasised that sustained enforcement efforts and swift prosecution of offenders will be necessary to deter future attacks.

As investigations continue, authorities remain optimistic that additional arrests will be made and that enhanced security measures will help protect Nigeria’s electricity transmission network. Protecting critical infrastructure, they said, is essential to improving power supply, supporting industrial growth and advancing the country’s economic development
