The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has recruited 3,852 new officers as part of efforts to strengthen its workforce and improve operational efficiency, while announcing the adoption of an annual recruitment cycle to ensure a steady inflow of qualified personnel.

The Comptroller General of Customs said the new recruitment policy is designed to enhance manpower planning, improve institutional capacity and support the Service’s expanding responsibilities in trade facilitation, border security and revenue generation.

According to the Service, the newly recruited officers will undergo comprehensive training to equip them with the skills required to tackle modern customs operations, including anti smuggling activities, cargo inspection, intelligence gathering and the application of digital technologies.

The annual recruitment framework is expected to replace the irregular employment pattern previously associated with the Service, providing a more transparent and predictable process for attracting qualified Nigerians into the organisation.

Customs authorities explained that the initiative forms part of broader reforms aimed at modernising the Service, improving professionalism and enhancing operational effectiveness in line with international best practices.

The recruitment drive comes as the NCS continues to deploy advanced technologies to strengthen border management, facilitate legitimate trade and improve revenue collection for the Federal Government.

Industry stakeholders welcomed the move, noting that a consistent recruitment process would help address manpower gaps, improve succession planning and enhance the Service’s ability to respond to emerging trade and security challenges.

Analysts also observed that expanding the Customs workforce could boost anti smuggling operations, improve cargo clearance efficiency and strengthen Nigeria’s efforts to protect its borders while promoting lawful international trade.

The Service reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, accountability and merit based recruitment, assuring prospective applicants that future exercises would follow clearly defined procedures and equal opportunity principles.

The adoption of an annual recruitment cycle is expected to strengthen institutional continuity and position the Nigeria Customs Service to meet the growing demands of regional and international trade while supporting national economic development.
