US Missile Defence Stockpiles Critically Low After Iran Conflict

The United States has depleted nearly 80 percent of its Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) interceptors and about half of its Patriot missile interceptors during the conflict with Iran, raising growing concerns about the country’s military readiness and future defence capabilities.

Senior US military commanders have warned the Pentagon that key munitions stockpiles are now dangerously low after months of sustained operations. The shortages have become a major factor in discussions over whether Washington should expand military action against Iran.

Officials familiar with internal assessments said the depletion of missile inventories contributed to President Donald Trump’s decision to suspend planned strikes on Iranian infrastructure over the weekend. Military advisers reportedly warned that further operations could leave the United States and its allies vulnerable to future threats.

Several Gulf allies have also expressed concern that reduced US interceptor stockpiles could weaken regional air defence systems if Iran launches retaliatory missile or drone attacks. Many countries in the region rely heavily on American supplied THAAD and Patriot systems for their security.

Current estimates suggest the United States had approximately:

  • 452 THAAD interceptors before the conflict
  • About 2,200 Patriot interceptors before the conflict

Military analysts believe rebuilding THAAD inventories to pre conflict levels could take more than three years, while replenishing Patriot missile stockpiles will also require several years because of limited production capacity.

The conflict has also significantly reduced inventories of other precision weapons, including Tomahawk cruise missiles and long range tactical missiles such as ATACMS and Precision Strike Missiles (PrSM).

Despite the concerns, the White House insisted the US military retains sufficient weapons to meet national security requirements. Pentagon officials said production of interceptor missiles is being accelerated through new defence contracts, although meaningful increases in supply are not expected immediately.

Experts warn that prolonged shortages could affect America’s ability to respond to future conflicts involving China, Russia or North Korea, while also reducing its capacity to support allies facing missile threats.
