The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has denied allegations that he made divisive comments about northern Nigerians, describing the claims as false and inconsistent with his record of engagement and humanitarian support across the region.

According to report by Vanguard Obi made the clarification during an interview on Sunday Politics on Channels Television, where he rejected suggestions that his presidency would deepen divisions between the northern and southern parts of the country.

“That’s a lie. It never happened,” Obi said, dismissing the allegation.

The former Anambra State governor pointed to his longstanding relationship with northern communities, recalling several visits to states affected by insecurity, violence and humanitarian crises.

He said he travelled to Borno State during the early years of the Boko Haram insurgency to console former Governor Ali Modu Sheriff following the killing of his brother, at a time when many people were reluctant to visit the state.

Obi also recalled visiting Borno after severe flooding, where he donated ₦50 million, met with the state governor and the Shehu of Borno, and visited internally displaced persons’ camps.

According to him, his humanitarian activities have taken him to several northern states, including Katsina, Kebbi, Gombe, Kaduna, Kano, Bauchi and Sokoto. He added that he had also visited communities affected by insecurity in Benue State and spent Christmas and New Year in IDP camps.

Obi further cited his personal and official relationships as evidence of his commitment to national unity, noting that his former ADC was from Kano and a Muslim.

He also said that during his eight years as governor of Anambra State, his administration supported Muslim residents of the state to undertake the annual Hajj pilgrimage.

The NDC presidential candidate added that he currently supports Almajiri schools in Kano and Bauchi, as well as a School of Nursing in Bauchi, describing the initiatives as part of his commitment to education, humanitarian support and national development.
