The National Pension Commission (PenCom) has announced plans to refine its investment framework while unveiling three strategic initiatives aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s pension industry, enhancing operational efficiency and improving retirement outcomes for contributors.
The commission said the review of its investment framework is intended to align pension fund investments with evolving market realities, global best practices and the long term interests of Retirement Savings Account holders. The move is expected to promote prudent fund management while ensuring sustainable returns for contributors.
According to PenCom, the enhanced framework will provide Pension Fund Administrators (PFAs) with clearer investment guidelines, improve risk management and encourage greater diversification of pension assets across eligible investment instruments.
Alongside the investment framework review, the commission launched three key initiatives designed to deepen pension administration and improve service delivery within the sector. The initiatives are expected to leverage digital innovation, strengthen regulatory oversight and enhance stakeholder engagement across the pension ecosystem.
PenCom noted that the programmes would also improve transparency, boost compliance among operators and make pension services more accessible to contributors and retirees nationwide.
Industry stakeholders have welcomed the reforms, saying they will reinforce confidence in Nigeria’s contributory pension scheme while supporting the long term growth of pension assets. They also believe the initiatives will encourage greater participation, improve governance and position the pension industry for sustainable expansion.
The commission reiterated its commitment to safeguarding contributors’ retirement savings through sound regulation, effective supervision and continuous policy improvements that reflect changing economic conditions.
PenCom added that it will continue working closely with Pension Fund Administrators, Pension Fund Custodians and other stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of the new initiatives and maintain the stability of Nigeria’s pension industry.
