The curtain has fallen on the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but the tournament will be remembered as one of the most historic editions in football history after producing a host of remarkable records, milestones and unforgettable performances.

Spain emerged as world champions after edging Argentina 1-0 in extra time in the final, securing the country’s second FIFA World Cup title. However, beyond Spain’s triumph, the tournament rewrote the record books in spectacular fashion.

According to FIFA statistics released after the competition, the first-ever 48-team World Cup became one of the highest-scoring tournaments in more than half a century while producing several individual feats that may stand for generations.

Highest-scoring World Cup in Over Five Decades

The expanded tournament delivered an impressive 308 goals in 104 matches, averaging 2.96 goals per game.

It marked the highest goals-per-game ratio since the 1970 FIFA World Cup, which averaged 2.97 goals per match. The figure also surpassed the averages recorded at Qatar 2022 (2.69), Russia 2018 (2.64) and Brazil 2014 (2.67).

Despite the attacking spectacle, the all-time record remains the 1954 FIFA World Cup in Switzerland, where matches averaged an extraordinary 5.38 goals.

Golden Generation of Goalscorers

The 2026 edition also witnessed an unprecedented number of elite goalscorers.

For the first time in FIFA World Cup history, six players scored six goals or more during a single tournament.

Top scorers:

  • Kylian Mbappé (France) – 10 goals
  • Lionel Messi (Argentina) – 8 goals
  • Jude Bellingham (England) – 7 goals
  • Erling Haaland (Norway) – 7 goals
  • Ousmane Dembélé (France) – 6 goals
  • Harry Kane (England) – 6 goals

Mbappé Rewrites World Cup History

France captain Kylian Mbappé produced one of the greatest individual campaigns in World Cup history.

The Real Madrid forward finished as the tournament’s leading scorer with 10 goals, becoming the first player ever to win the FIFA World Cup Golden Boot at two different tournaments, having also claimed the award in Qatar 2022.

Mbappé also became the first footballer since Germany legend Gerd Müller in 1970 to score 10 goals in a single World Cup.

Only Just Fontaine (13 goals in 1958) and Sándor Kocsis (11 goals in 1954) have scored more in one edition of the tournament.

New King of World Cup Goals

One of the biggest storylines throughout the tournament was the battle between Kylian Mbappé and Lionel Messi to become the FIFA World Cup’s all-time leading scorer.

Messi began the tournament with 13 World Cup goals, while Mbappé had 12. Both eclipsed Miroslav Klose’s previous record of 16 goals.

Messi temporarily moved ahead during Argentina’s run to the final, reaching 21 World Cup goals.

However, Mbappé sealed the historic record by scoring twice in France’s third-place victory over England, ending the tournament with 22 World Cup goals—the highest tally in FIFA World Cup history.

Set Pieces Continue to Shape Results

Dead-ball situations once again proved decisive throughout the tournament.

A total of 54 goals originated from set pieces, including 38 goals from corners, free-kicks and long throw-ins, while 16 penalties were successfully converted.

Overall, 17.5 per cent of all goals scored at the tournament came from set-piece situations, highlighting their growing importance in modern football.

Long-Range Goals Make a Comeback

Spectacular strikes from distance also became a defining feature of the competition.

Teams combined to score 43 goals from outside the penalty area, comprising seven direct free-kicks and 36 goals from open play.

The increase reflected the confidence and technical quality displayed by players throughout the tournament, with long-range efforts providing many of the competition’s most memorable moments.

A Tournament That Redefined Football History

From Spain’s memorable triumph and Mbappé’s record-breaking exploits to the tournament’s remarkable attacking numbers, the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be remembered as one of the greatest editions ever staged.

With records tumbling, new stars emerging and football history rewritten, the tournament has set a new benchmark ahead of the centenary FIFA World Cup in 2030.
