Troops of the Nigerian Army have killed a Boko Haram fighter and disrupted an attempt by terrorists to collect illegal levies from residents in Yobe State.
The operation was carried out during a military offensive targeting insurgents operating in parts of the state. According to military sources, the troops engaged the terrorists in a gun battle, neutralising one fighter while forcing others to flee into nearby bushes with varying degrees of gunshot wounds.
The troops also foiled an attempt by the insurgents to extort money from local residents through the collection of illegal levies, a practice commonly used by terrorist groups to finance their operations and intimidate communities.
Military authorities said the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to deny Boko Haram and other terrorist groups freedom of movement and access to financial resources in the North-East.
They reaffirmed the military’s commitment to sustaining offensive operations against insurgents while urging residents to continue providing credible information that would aid security agencies in combating terrorism and restoring lasting peace to the region.
