A teacher accused of flogging a 12 year old student to death in Anambra State has surrendered to the police, days after authorities launched a manhunt for the suspect.
The Anambra State Police Command had announced on Friday that it was searching for the teacher following allegations that the victim died after being severely flogged in Adazi Ani, a community in Anaocha Local Government Area of the state.
According to the police, the teacher turned himself in after learning that security operatives were searching for him in connection with the incident.
The command said the suspect is now in police custody and is assisting investigators as they work to establish the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.
The tragic incident has sparked outrage among residents and renewed concerns over the use of corporal punishment in schools. Community members have called for a thorough investigation and justice for the deceased child.
Police authorities assured the public that the investigation would be conducted professionally and that anyone found responsible would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The body of the deceased has reportedly been deposited for an autopsy as part of the ongoing investigation.
