The Supreme Court has overturned an earlier Court of Appeal judgment that cancelled the forfeiture of properties linked to former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele. The apex court restored the Federal High Court’s decision, making the forfeiture of the assets to the Federal Government final.
The ruling covers seven landed properties, about 2.45 million US dollars in cash, and share certificates that investigators said were connected to proceeds of unlawful activities. The Supreme Court held that the Appeal Court was wrong to set aside the original forfeiture order and therefore reinstated it.
The decision marks a major legal victory for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, in its long-running case involving the former CBN governor’s assets.
