China has condemned new U.S. visa regulations introduced by the administration of President Donald Trump, describing the measures as discriminatory and warning that Beijing will take reciprocal action if Washington does not reverse the policy.
China’s Foreign Ministry said the revised visa rules unfairly target Chinese nationals, particularly journalists and exchange visitors, and undermine normal educational, cultural and media exchanges between the two countries.
Speaking at a regular press briefing in Beijing, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian urged the United States to abandon what he described as politically motivated restrictions and to uphold the legitimate rights of Chinese citizens travelling to the U.S. He added that China reserves the right to take “necessary countermeasures” to safeguard its national interests.
The criticism follows the Trump administration’s announcement of new visa regulations that replace the long-standing “duration of status” system for F (student) and J (exchange visitor) visas with fixed periods of stay. The new rules also limit I visas for foreign journalists to 240 days, while Chinese journalists will be subject to a shorter 90-day validity period.
U.S. officials said the changes are intended to strengthen immigration oversight, enhance national security and ensure greater compliance with visa conditions. The regulations are expected to take effect 60 days after publication, subject to the completion of the required review process.
The latest dispute adds to a series of disagreements between Washington and Beijing over trade, technology, national security and diplomatic relations. While both countries have recently engaged in talks aimed at stabilising ties, the new visa restrictions are expected to become another point of contention.
Analysts say China’s response signals that the dispute could extend beyond immigration policy, with the possibility of reciprocal measures affecting American citizens, journalists or academic exchanges if diplomatic efforts fail to ease tensions.
The developments come as the United States and China continue to navigate an increasingly complex relationship shaped by strategic competition and growing geopolitical rivalry.
