President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the reconstruction of critical sections of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and the expansion of key legacy highway projects across the country as part of the Federal Government’s renewed commitment to improving Nigeria’s road infrastructure and driving economic growth.
The approval is expected to accelerate the rehabilitation of one of Nigeria’s busiest transport corridors, which serves as a major gateway for the movement of passengers, agricultural produce and industrial goods between Lagos, the South West and other parts of the country. The reconstruction is aimed at addressing deteriorating sections of the highway, easing traffic congestion and improving safety for millions of road users.
In addition to the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, the President also approved the expansion of several strategic legacy highway projects considered vital to national development. Government officials said the projects are designed to strengthen connectivity between economic hubs, reduce travel time, lower transportation costs and facilitate the efficient movement of goods and services.
The Federal Government noted that the infrastructure programme aligns with its Renewed Hope Agenda, which places significant emphasis on modernising the nation’s transport network to stimulate trade, attract investment and enhance economic productivity. The projects are also expected to generate thousands of direct and indirect jobs during the construction phase while supporting businesses that rely heavily on road transportation.
Industry experts described the approvals as a major boost for Nigeria’s infrastructure development, noting that improved road networks will reduce vehicle operating costs, minimise post-harvest losses and enhance the competitiveness of key sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing and logistics. They also stressed the importance of timely execution, effective project supervision and sustainable funding to ensure the roads deliver long-term economic benefits.
Analysts believe the reconstruction of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and the expansion of legacy highway projects will strengthen regional integration, improve access to markets and reinforce the government’s broader objective of building a modern transport system capable of supporting inclusive economic growth and national development.
