The Oyo State Government has unveiled a comprehensive digital land registry designed to modernise land administration, improve transparency and eliminate inefficiencies that have long hindered property transactions in the state.
The initiative marks a major step in the state’s digital transformation agenda and is expected to revolutionise the way land records are processed, stored and accessed. By replacing manual documentation with a secure electronic platform, the government aims to significantly reduce delays in land registration, title processing and verification, while making property transactions faster, more transparent and more efficient.
State officials said the digital registry will strengthen the integrity of land records by minimising cases of forgery, multiple allocations, document manipulation and ownership disputes that have discouraged investment in the real estate sector. The platform will also provide a centralised database that allows government agencies, investors, financial institutions and property owners to verify land information quickly and accurately.
The government noted that the reform is expected to improve the ease of doing business in Oyo State by providing investors with greater confidence in land ownership and simplifying access to Certificates of Occupancy and other statutory documents. It added that the digital system will enhance accountability, reduce human interference in land administration and improve public access to government services.
Experts in the real estate sector described the initiative as a landmark reform capable of unlocking billions of naira in property investments. They noted that a transparent and technology-driven land administration system will encourage mortgage financing, facilitate infrastructure development and support sustainable urban planning while reducing costly litigation arising from conflicting land claims.
The digital registry is also expected to strengthen the state’s internally generated revenue by improving the collection of land-related charges, registration fees and property taxes through automated processes that minimise revenue leakages. Financial institutions are expected to benefit from easier verification of land titles, making it less risky to finance housing and commercial real estate projects.
Analysts believe the initiative places Oyo State among the leading sub-national governments embracing digital governance to drive economic development. They maintain that efficient land administration is critical to attracting domestic and foreign investment, promoting industrial expansion and creating a more predictable business environment.
With the launch of the digital land registry, the Oyo State Government has taken a significant step towards building a transparent, technology-driven and investor-friendly property sector, positioning the state to harness the full economic potential of its land resources while improving public confidence in land administration.
