U.S. Attorney General nominee Todd Blanche faced intense questioning from lawmakers during his Senate confirmation hearing, with discussions centering on the handling of files related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and concerns over the Justice Department’s independence.
Senators from both parties pressed Blanche on whether he would allow political considerations to influence decisions within the Justice Department. Several lawmakers also sought assurances that investigations would be conducted impartially and without interference.
Much of the hearing focused on public interest surrounding the government’s handling of records connected to Epstein. Senators questioned Blanche about transparency, the release of investigative documents and whether the Justice Department would continue reviewing requests for additional disclosures where legally appropriate.
Blanche told the committee he would uphold the rule of law and ensure that all prosecutorial decisions are based on facts and evidence rather than political influence. He also pledged to maintain the Justice Department’s independence if confirmed.
The confirmation hearing comes amid heightened scrutiny of the Justice Department and growing public attention on high profile investigations. Lawmakers said maintaining confidence in the department’s impartiality remains essential to preserving public trust in the U.S. justice system.
The Senate Judiciary Committee is expected to vote on Blanche’s nomination before it proceeds to the full Senate for confirmation.
