A British man imprisoned in Iran has had his jail sentence extended by an additional two years, deepening concerns over the treatment of foreign nationals detained by Iranian authorities.

Foreman and his wife, Lindsay, were arrested in January 2025 while travelling through Iran on a motorcycle journey from Europe to Australia. Iranian authorities accused the couple of espionage, allegations they have consistently denied. Both were sentenced to 10 years in prison earlier this year.

According to Reuters, Craig Foreman’s original 10 year prison sentence was increased after an Iranian court convicted him of an additional offence linked to alleged propaganda against the state. His family said they had not been formally notified of the ruling and only learned of the decision through unofficial channels.

The family described the latest development as deeply distressing and said they remain concerned about the couple’s welfare and access to a fair legal process. Previous appeals against their convictions were unsuccessful, with relatives alleging the proceedings lacked transparency and that the pair were unable to fully participate in their defence.

The British government has repeatedly condemned the couple’s detention as unjustified and said it continues to press Iranian authorities for their release while providing consular assistance. Human rights experts have also raised concerns about the couple’s treatment, including reports of hunger strikes and deteriorating health conditions in prison.

The case adds to longstanding tensions between the United Kingdom and Iran over the detention of foreign nationals, with rights groups accusing Tehran of using such arrests as political leverage, an allegation Iranian authorities deny.
