The Mining Marshals of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have warned mining operators across the country to obtain valid licences and comply with safety regulations or face enforcement action.

The warning comes as the Corps intensifies operations at mining sites nationwide to tackle illegal mining, protect the country’s mineral resources and ensure operators follow established laws. The Commander of the Mining Marshals, Assistant Commandant of Corps (ACC) Attah John Onoja, issued the warning in a statement on Tuesday while providing an update on ongoing enforcement activities, including a recent operation in Nasarawa State.

He said the exercise was carried out alongside the Federal Mines Officer and the team responsible for regulating mining activities in the state. Onoja explained that enforcement operations would continue across the country, without following a fixed order of locations. He stressed that mining operators must meet all legal and regulatory requirements before beginning their activities.

According to him, operators are expected to possess valid licenses and satisfy the necessary operational conditions before engaging in mining. He also emphasized the importance of regular inspections and monitoring of mining sites to ensure compliance with safety standards.

Onoja warned that failure to follow safety requirements could expose miners and surrounding communities to preventable dangers, including fatal accidents, mine collapses and other operational hazards. He added that anyone found violating relevant mining laws and regulations would face appropriate enforcement measures.

The commander said the ongoing operations formed part of the NSCDC’s commitment under Commandant-General Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi to support the policy objectives of the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr Dele Alake. These objectives include reducing illegal mining, preventing revenue losses, improving safety across mining sites and creating a more attractive environment for investors in the solid minerals industry. Onoja reaffirmed the Mining Marshals’ commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s mineral resources, enforcing mining regulations and promoting responsible mining practices across the country.

The NSCDC is strengthening its efforts to stop illegal mining and ensure operators have valid licences before carrying out mining activities. The enforcement drive also aims to prevent mining accidents, protect communities and improve accountability in Nigeria’s solid minerals sector.
