Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Tim Sherwood has described Alex Iwobi as one of the Premier League’s most underrated players after the Nigerian midfielder scored the decisive goal in Fulham’s 1-0 victory over Hull City on Saturday.
Speaking on Sky Sports after the match at Craven Cottage, Sherwood praised Iwobi’s consistency, versatility and ability to perform across different positions.
“Iwobi must be one of the most underrated players in the Premier League,” he said.
“The amount of games he churns out, the different positions he plays. He was excellent today. He was the goal scorer, but he was absolutely fantastic today,” Sherwood added.
Iwobi broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute after Sander Berge set him up following two unsuccessful attempts by Hull to clear their lines. The Nigerian’s effort took a deflection before slipping beneath goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis.
The goal ended Iwobi’s six-match league run without a goal or assist, despite creating 13 chances during that period. It was his first goal of the season and took his Premier League tally to 36 goals in 327 appearances, matching former Nigerian international Peter Odemwingie’s record.
The victory marked Fulham’s first win of the season and their first under manager Alvaro Arbeloa, lifting the club from the bottom of the table.
Super Eagles teammate Calvin Bassey completed the match for Fulham, while fellow Nigerian Semi Ajayi played the full 90 minutes for Hull.
Iwobi’s performance further highlighted his importance to Fulham, with Sherwood’s comments drawing attention to the midfielder’s consistent contributions beyond goals and assists.
