A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ogun State, Topa Olusegun Peter, has denied reports identifying him as a governorship aspirant for the 2027 election, insisting that his name was used without his knowledge or consent.

Peter, who is the traditional community leader of Olorunsogo in Ilara, Imeko-Afon Local Government Area, made the clarification after reports emerged that a lawyer, Anderson Asemota of Neplus Ultra Attorneys, had petitioned the Independent National Electoral Commission over the omission of Peter’s name from the final list of governorship candidates.

The lawyer reportedly gave INEC 48 hours to explain why Peter’s name was excluded and demanded that the commission publish him as the PDP’s duly nominated candidate for the February 6, 2027 governorship election.

However, Peter said he was surprised to see his name in newspaper reports as a governorship aspirant. He insisted that he had neither purchased a nomination form nor signed any document indicating his intention to contest the election.

The PDP chieftain alleged that the controversy began after a meeting with the All Progressives Congress chairman in Imeko-Afon Local Government Area, Ramoni Adebolu, and other APC leaders, who approached him with an unspecified political offer.

Peter claimed that he rejected the offer because he was not interested in accepting a political position arranged outside his own party. He also denied collecting money from anyone involved in the alleged discussions.

He further said he had never met or spoken with Asemota and did not authorise the lawyer to act on his behalf. He called on INEC to investigate how his name came to be used in the reported petition and related publications.

Peter also expressed concern about the safety of himself and his family, appealing to security agencies and relevant authorities to investigate the matter.

However, Adebolu denied discussing any governorship arrangement with Peter. He said his meeting with the PDP chieftain was intended to persuade him and others to defect to the APC, adding that he knew nothing about the publications identifying Peter as a governorship aspirant.

The controversy follows INEC’s publication of the final list of candidates for the Ogun governorship election, which reportedly excluded the PDP’s expected candidate, Oladipupo Adebutu.

Peter reaffirmed his loyalty to the PDP, saying he had belonged to the party since its formation in 1998.
