Elena Perepelitsa, a member of Russia’s liberal Yabloko party, has been sentenced to four years in a penal colony for donating money to an organisation classified by Russian authorities as extremist, state news agency TASS reported on Thursday.

Perepelitsa, whose party opposes the war in Ukraine, was detained in July, shortly after Yabloko deputy leader Maxim Kruglov was sentenced to seven years in prison for spreading what Russian authorities described as false information about the Russian army.

The cases come amid continued legal pressure on Russian political figures who have criticised the government or opposed the war in Ukraine.
