The National Assembly has warned Nigerian athletes against using banned substances, urging them to maintain discipline and comply with anti doping regulations in local and international competitions.
The warning was issued as lawmakers stressed the importance of protecting the integrity of Nigerian sports and ensuring that athletes compete fairly without relying on prohibited performance enhancing substances.
The lawmakers noted that athletes who use banned substances risk serious health consequences, suspension and disqualification from competitions. They also urged sports administrators, coaches and medical personnel to educate athletes on substances that could result in positive doping tests.
The National Assembly further called for stronger collaboration among relevant sports authorities to prevent doping and protect the careers of Nigerian athletes.
It urged athletes to seek professional advice before taking medications, supplements or other products, particularly because some substances may contain ingredients prohibited under anti doping rules.
The lawmakers said Nigeria must strengthen its efforts to promote clean sports and ensure that athletes represent the country with integrity at major international competitions.
