The Adamawa State Government has inaugurated the newly constituted Teachers’ Service Commission Board, with members tasked with driving reforms aimed at improving the management of teachers and strengthening the state’s education system.
According to the Adamawa News Agency, the inauguration was performed by the Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Dr. Umar Garba Pella, at the conference hall of the ministry.
Dr. Pella congratulated the chairman and members of the commission, describing their appointment as both an opportunity to contribute to the state’s development and a significant responsibility.
He said the education sector requires comprehensive reform, noting that the existing structure of the Post Primary Schools Management Board (PPSMB) had become less suited to the demands of the modern education system.
The commissioner explained that the new Teachers’ Service Commission would provide a more streamlined and flexible structure for the recruitment, employment and welfare of teachers, as well as the management of schools and non-teaching personnel.
He noted that the school system remains central to the delivery of quality education in the state, adding that the large number of schools under the existing structure had created management challenges.
According to him, Adamawa has more than 500 schools, making it necessary to introduce a more focused institution capable of effectively managing teachers and responding to emerging challenges in the sector.
Dr. Pella said the appointment of Dr. Saleh Bukar as chairman was intended to bring fresh ideas and provide effective leadership during the transition to the new commission. He assured the board of the continued support of the state government and the ministry.
He further disclosed that the commission has seven members, including representatives of relevant stakeholders such as the Nigeria Union of Teachers, Ministry of Finance and the Association of Heads of Comprehensive Schools.
Responding, the Chairman of the Teachers’ Service Commission, Dr. Saleh Bukar, appreciated Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri for the confidence reposed in the board and pledged to justify the appointment through meaningful contributions to the education sector.
Dr. Bukar said the commission would work with relevant stakeholders to ensure that government investment in education translates into improved outcomes in primary and secondary education across the state.
He added that collaboration would be critical to achieving the government’s objectives and ensuring that teachers and schools receive the attention required to deliver quality education.
The State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, Comrade Faisal Abubakar Muhammed, in his vote of thanks, commended Governor Fintiri for establishing the commission and expressed the union’s readiness to work with the new body for the improvement of teachers’ welfare and the education system.
The newly inaugurated commission comprises Dr. Saleh Bukar as Chairman, with Mrs. Irene Hamadu, Reverend Daniel Bulus and Alhaji Adamu Bello as Permanent Members.
The Part-Time Members are Isa Mohammed, Usman Pius Ayuba and Mrs. Bless Calvin.
