Kano State has recorded the highest number of candidates who obtained at least five credits, including English Language and Mathematics, in the 2026 Senior School Certificate Examination conducted by the National Examinations Council (NECO).
A total of 74,413 candidates in Kano met the benchmark, placing the state ahead of Lagos, which recorded 72,496 candidates, and Oyo, with 55,543 candidates.
The performance marks the second consecutive year Kano has recorded the highest number of candidates meeting the five-credit requirement in the NECO examination.
Governor Abba Yusuf congratulated the students, teachers, parents and other stakeholders in the state’s education sector, attributing the performance to continued investment in education.
The state government said it spent more than N4.4 billion in 2026 to sponsor students sitting for the Senior School Certificate Examination, particularly candidates from indigent backgrounds.
The government also highlighted interventions including classroom renovations, teacher recruitment and training, provision of learning materials, scholarships and other forms of student support.
Nationally, NECO reported that 804,948 candidates, representing 58.67 per cent, obtained at least five credits, including English Language and Mathematics, in the 2026 examination.
Kano’s result adds to the state’s recent focus on expanding educational opportunities and improving examination outcomes.
