European defence ministers are meeting in Brussels on Monday to discuss continued military support for Ukraine as Russia intensifies missile and drone attacks and concerns grow over security threats across Europe.
The meeting is expected to focus on Ukraine’s urgent need for additional air-defence systems, military assistance and financial support. Ukrainian Defence Minister Yevhenii Khmara is scheduled to brief ministers by video on developments on the ground.
EU officials are also examining wider measures to strengthen Europe’s ability to respond to hybrid threats, including alleged drone and aircraft incursions linked to Russia. The discussions come as European governments seek to reinforce their own defences while maintaining support for Kyiv.
The European Union has recently agreed to release a €6.6 billion military aid programme for Ukraine that had been stalled since 2023. Further financial support remains a major issue, with Kyiv facing substantial funding requirements for its war effort.
Meanwhile, Pope Leo XIV is completing his four-day visit to France, travelling to Metz on Monday where he is scheduled to address European leaders on peace and unity before celebrating Mass at the city’s cathedral.
The developments highlight the continuing intersection of Europe’s security, diplomatic and humanitarian challenges as the war in Ukraine enters another critical phase.
