The Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has alleged that Governor Seyi Makinde’s presidential ambition is an attempt to evade investigations and leave Nigeria before the end of his tenure.
The allegation was contained in a statement issued by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Wasiu Sadare, on Sunday.
According to Sadare, Makinde, who is the presidential candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement, APM, is seeking the presidency as a way of creating an avenue to leave the country before his tenure ends in May 2027.
The APC spokesman further alleged that the governor was facing several corruption and abuse of office allegations, which he claimed were being investigated by anti-graft agencies.
Sadare also alleged that Makinde was planning to leave Nigeria from January 2027, describing his presidential campaign as an attempt to distract Nigerians and investigators.
The Oyo APC said it was monitoring developments surrounding Makinde’s political activities and claimed that relevant security agencies were aware of its allegations.
Makinde has publicly presented his presidential bid differently. After accepting the APM presidential nomination, he said his ambition was aimed at restoring hope and rebuilding confidence in Nigeria, rather than serving personal interests.
The governor has also continued to campaign on issues including economic reform, transparency in the petroleum sector and improved governance ahead of the 2027 election.
The allegations by the Oyo APC remain claims by the opposition party and do not by themselves establish that Makinde is seeking the presidency to evade any criminal investigation.
