The National Information Technology Development Agency, NITDA, has cautioned Nigeria against excessive reliance on artificial intelligence, AI, systems developed and controlled outside the country.

The agency said overdependence on foreign AI technologies could create strategic vulnerabilities and limit Nigeria’s ability to control critical digital infrastructure, data and technological development.

NITDA stressed the need for Nigeria to strengthen its local capacity in artificial intelligence by supporting indigenous innovation, research, talent development and the creation of homegrown AI solutions.

The agency noted that developing local expertise and infrastructure would enable Nigeria to harness the benefits of AI while protecting its digital sovereignty and ensuring that emerging technologies address the country’s unique needs.

NITDA’s position highlights the growing importance of building a strong domestic technology ecosystem capable of developing, deploying and responsibly managing advanced AI systems.

The agency encouraged greater collaboration among government, technology companies, universities, researchers and startups to accelerate Nigeria’s AI development and reduce dependence on externally controlled technologies.
