Mikel Arteta reached another significant milestone in his Arsenal career on Monday as he took charge of his 250th Premier League match for the club, marking the occasion with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Aston Villa at Villa Park.
Bukayo Saka scored the decisive goal in the 59th minute to hand Arsenal their second consecutive victory of the new Premier League campaign and ensure Arteta’s landmark appearance ended on a winning note.
According to BBC Sport, the Spanish coach has now joined an exclusive group of managers who have overseen at least 250 Premier League matches at a single club.
Arteta, who previously played for Arsenal before returning to the club as head coach, has recorded 151 victories, 48 draws and 51 defeats in his 250 league matches.
That gives him an impressive 60.4 per cent win rate, placing him fourth among managers who have reached the 250-game mark at one Premier League club.
He trails former Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, who boasts a 70.8 per cent win rate, Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson on 65.2 per cent and former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp on 62.6 per cent.
Arsenal supporters celebrated their manager after the final whistle at Villa Park, chanting his name as the Gunners secured an important away victory.
Reflecting on the achievement, Arteta expressed his gratitude for the support he has received since taking charge of the club.
“I’m extremely grateful. It starts to be a big number,” Arteta said.
He added that he was delighted to mark the occasion with a victory, particularly given Arsenal’s previous disappointment at Villa Park.
The Arsenal boss described the result as a collective effort and praised his players for their discipline and determination.
“It’s a really tough place to come and win,” Arteta said, recalling Arsenal’s defeat at Villa Park last season.
He noted that the team still remembered losing to Villa with virtually the last kick of the game and was pleased with the way his players responded this time.
Arteta also highlighted the improvement Arsenal showed in the final third, saying the team had been working on creating more openings, becoming more clinical and finishing their chances.
The victory means Arsenal have won both of their opening Premier League fixtures this season, giving them a perfect start as they continue their pursuit of domestic honours.
The Gunners have also extended an impressive away record, having won their opening away league fixture in each of the last five seasons.
For Aston Villa, however, the defeat compounded their difficult beginning to the campaign under Unai Emery.
Villa are still searching for their first Premier League points of the season and have yet to register a shot on target in the competition.
Arteta’s latest milestone further underlines the progress he has made since taking over at Arsenal, with his long-term project continuing to deliver consistency and a growing list of club records.
