SpaceX is expanding its Starship launch infrastructure with plans to build a new spaceport in southern Louisiana, marking a major step in the company’s effort to dramatically increase the frequency of Starship launches.
The proposed facility, known as Starbase Louisiana, is expected to become SpaceX’s fourth spaceport. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027, subject to the necessary approvals and development processes.
According to SpaceX, the Louisiana complex is being designed as a largely self-sufficient spaceport. Plans include Starship launch facilities, vehicle processing infrastructure, propellant production, power generation, deep-water shipping capabilities and an airport. The company says the site could eventually support thousands of Starship flights each year.
The project is part of SpaceX’s broader strategy to establish multiple Starship operating locations rather than relying primarily on its existing facilities in South Texas. The company has previously said that achieving a very high Starship flight cadence will require additional launch sites.
Why Louisiana Matters
Louisiana offers SpaceX access to the Gulf Coast, transportation infrastructure and a relatively sparsely populated coastal area. The project could also strengthen the state’s position as an aerospace and rocket-development hub, building on the region’s existing space infrastructure, including NASA’s Stennis Space Center nearby in Mississippi. NASA describes Stennis as the agency’s primary and largest rocket propulsion testing site.
However, the project is also attracting environmental concerns. The proposed development involves a large area of coastal Louisiana, where environmental groups and some residents have raised concerns about potential impacts on wetlands, wildlife, coastal ecosystems, noise and surrounding communities.
The Bigger Picture
Starship is central to SpaceX’s long-term ambitions for high-frequency spaceflight, including missions to the Moon and Mars. The company is simultaneously increasing Starship testing and development in Texas, while NASA is evaluating expanded Starship operations at Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
The Louisiana project therefore represents more than another launch pad: it could become a key component of SpaceX’s planned high-volume Starship transportation network, potentially transforming the Gulf Coast into another major center for commercial spaceflight.
