Tension has continued to rise in Osun State following reports of violence in Ikire and growing accusations between the All Progressives Congress, APC, and the Accord Party over attacks linked to local councils and motor parks.
The Osun State Police Command confirmed that two civilians were killed when a patrol team responding to a distress call along the Ibadan-Ife Expressway came under attack by suspected political thugs. The police vehicle was reportedly taken by the attackers and later recovered with multiple bullet holes and a damaged windscreen.
The incident has heightened concerns over post-election violence, with the state government earlier warning of alleged plans by some stakeholders to create fresh crises at local government councils and motor parks.
The APC accused Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration of allowing political thuggery to thrive, while the Accord Party rejected the allegations and instead accused the police of provoking the violence at the motor park. Both parties have called for investigations, although they continue to trade blame over the events in Ikire.
Former Osun State governor and Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Gboyega Oyetola, also condemned the violence and urged security agencies to restore peace and ensure that those responsible for the killings are brought to justice.
The latest developments have raised fears that unresolved political disputes could further disrupt businesses, transportation and public activities across the state. Stakeholders have therefore been urged to avoid inflammatory statements and seek peaceful means of resolving political and commercial disagreements.
