China has launched the largest automotive recall in its history, with about 4.3 million vehicles from nine automakers affected by concerns over emergency door-release systems.

Tesla accounts for the largest share, with approximately 2.98 million Model 3, Model Y, Model S and Model X vehicles included in the recall. Regulators are concerned that mechanical emergency door releases may be difficult to locate or operate, particularly after a serious crash that causes the vehicle’s electrical system to fail.

The remedies include warning labels, software updates and changes designed to automatically lower vehicle windows after a collision, making it easier for occupants to escape or for rescuers to gain access. Other affected automakers include Xiaomi, Leapmotor and XPeng.

The action reflects China’s increasingly aggressive approach to automotive safety regulation as electric vehicles become a dominant part of its car market. Beijing is also moving toward tighter rules on concealed and retractable door handles, with restrictions scheduled to take effect for new vehicles in 2027.

The recall is significant beyond Tesla. It signals that China is seeking to establish stricter safety standards for advanced electric vehicles and could influence how automakers design emergency systems in other major markets.
