The Adamawa State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Aloysius Babadoke, has defended the conversion of the former Adamawa Zoo site into an amusement park, dismissing criticism surrounding the development.
Babadoke said the zoo ceased operations more than 20 years ago and argued that the site was no longer suitable for keeping wild animals.
The commissioner made the clarification while reacting to a video circulating on social media that purportedly showed the former zoo and questioned the decision to convert the location into a park.
He said the video was misleading and did not accurately represent the former zoo site, adding that construction work on the amusement park had been ongoing since 2024.
According to him, the project is located behind the Deputy Governor’s Office in Yola and is expected to be completed later this year.
Babadoke also explained that security concerns made the location unsuitable for a modern zoo, particularly one intended to house dangerous animals. He said the government could consider relocating a zoo to a more appropriate location if the need arises.
The commissioner urged members of the public to disregard what he described as misleading information being circulated about the project.
He expressed confidence that the completed amusement park would become one of the leading recreational facilities in Nigeria and contribute to tourism development in Adamawa State.
