Charlton Athletic are assisting police with an investigation after a man was found dead at The Valley stadium in London on Tuesday morning.
Police were called to the stadium following an incident that occurred in the early hours of Monday morning. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a statement released by the Championship club on Tuesday evening.
Charlton said the circumstances surrounding the death remain under investigation.
“The death remains under investigation,” the club said.
The London-based club urged anyone who may have information about the incident or witnessed what happened to contact the police on 101, quoting reference 2809/18AUG.
Charlton also expressed its condolences to the deceased man’s family, friends and loved ones during what it described as an incredibly difficult time.
“Everyone at Charlton Athletic would like to express their deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to the individual’s family, friends and loved ones at this incredibly difficult time,” the club said.
The club confirmed that it would continue cooperating fully with the authorities as investigations continue and appealed for privacy for everyone affected by the incident.
Charlton also stressed that there was no suggestion of wrongdoing on the part of the club.
“There is no suggestion of any wrongdoing on the part of the club,” the statement added.
The club further praised its staff for their professionalism in responding to what it described as a difficult and distressing situation.
“Charlton Athletic would also like to thank its staff for the professionalism they have shown while dealing with a particularly difficult and distressing situation,” the club said.
Police enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the death are ongoing.
