Cagliari forward Yael Trepy has regained consciousness and been taken off mechanical ventilation, two days after he was rescued unconscious from a swimming pool in Sardinia.
The 20-year-old was airlifted to hospital on Sunday afternoon after getting into difficulty while swimming with friends at a villa.
Trepy was initially placed in a medically induced coma and put on a ventilator following the incident. However, his condition has steadily improved, with doctors gradually reducing his sedation and respiratory support on Tuesday.
Cagliari said the process allowed the young forward to wake from the induced coma.
The Director of the Emergency and Intensive Care Unit at Santissima Annunziata Civil Hospital in Sassari, Dr Stefania Milia, confirmed on Wednesday that Trepy had fully regained consciousness.
“Upon awakening, the patient showed a full recovery of consciousness: he is alert and co-operative and, at present, shows no evident neurological deficits,” Milia said.
Trepy remains in intensive care, where doctors will continue to monitor his condition closely.
“[He] continues to receive close clinical and respiratory monitoring,” Milia added.
An earlier medical update revealed that Trepy was fever-free and that his respiratory function had improved significantly from his critical condition when he was admitted to hospital.
Despite the encouraging progress, doctors have maintained a guarded prognosis as they continue to assess his recovery.
Reports indicate that the incident occurred after Trepy reached a deeper section of the swimming pool where he was unable to touch the bottom and subsequently experienced difficulties.
The Cagliari player had been given the weekend off alongside his teammates following the club’s 1-0 Coppa Italia victory over Arezzo on Friday. Trepy featured for 54 minutes in that match.
The young forward made eight Serie A appearances for Cagliari last season, scoring one goal.
Trepy joined Cagliari’s academy in 2022 after beginning his youth career with Parisian club US Créteil Lusitanos.
His return to consciousness and removal from mechanical ventilation represent significant steps forward after the frightening incident, although he remains in intensive care and under close medical supervision.
